Telecaster DIY Guitar Build
I built a Tele style guitar with lumber and Masonite. The neck and electronics are from a Squier Affinity.
I used construction grade lumber(buy seasoned lumber, if you can) and hardboard to make a guitar in the shape of a telecaster body.
After sawing the wood, and cutting out the body shape with a scrollsaw, I glued the hardboard top and back to the frame.
I made some templates out of paper, which were helpful for placing the pickup cavities and electronics.
An acrylic neck jig helped line the neck up properly.
Finally, I painted it a bright red color, with some truly suspect graffiti style spray paint.
I recorded some sound samples, which far exceeded my expectations for Squier parts. The Guitar is comfortable to play, not too heavy and keeps good tune.
It's a win, in my book!
Total cost for this build was right around $300, as follows:
Squier Affinity Telecaster....$230
Douglas Fir 2"x12"x8'....$18(divided by 4= $4.50 per body)
Hardboard/Masonite 4'x8'....$15(divided by 6= $2.50 per body)
Top load bridge....$15
Strings....$6
Spray Paint....$10
Vinyl Sticker....$4
Sandpaper....$20
Scroll saw blades....$10
Obviously this build could be made for much less if you already have a donor guitar, or find a $100 donor guitar. At the time of my Squier purchase, used Affinity teles were $200 minimum, so I decided to purchase new.
Currently, the cheapest similar new Dano guitar for sale is $500, so that's a pretty substantial savings.
Thanks KungFu Luke for the scroll saw(and the router)! Learn more at:

Another nail in the coffin for "but muh-tonewood".
Lol, not bad for Masonite, right?
I challenge you make another tele but from solid oak and solid maple
I do have enough walnut for a telecaster build....
Awesome 🙋🏻♂️🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃🎸🔥
Thanks for checking it out!
thank you very much posting!! nice clean twang tele sound that I like it!!
It's a pretty good combination, thanks for suggesting!
This is pure entertainment.
Beautiful build, I’m not a fan of “worker harder not smarter”, but you made it work.
Thanks! This one was definitely an educational journey. I learned a lot about what not to do!
Very nice sound ! I got some LM386 ic, I maybe could try making an amp like you !
It's a good circuit for guitar.
why does my b chord have no sound
Try just a few strings at a time...
you should build a flying v, an explorer, a les paul, with the masonite. or a longhorn bass copy, or an SG
I'd go for any of those! Finding the necks and parts is the hard part though!
Good work, but definitely invest in the right paints and do some clearcoating if you're investing this much time in a build. Sounded great though man.
Hey, thanks for checking it out! Yeah, the paintjob was initially a let down, but considering the type of build(kind of a knock-around song writing instrument) I can live with it. The paint only really looks suspect up close. From a few feet away it looks pretty decent. I have a few more of these to build before I move onto some solid body builds, which might merit some Nitro-Lacquer or some type of danish oil.
Hi Frank. Very nice work, I admire it, and it sounds very good. Friendships.
Hey, thanks! And thanks for checking it out!
Hardboard...WTF??????????????????
Sure, hardboard guitars are nice to have around. They make great songwriting instruments.
That's how danelectros and Silvertones were made back in the day
Late to the J4T party. My question, when recording without earphones, how do you prevent the bleed from track one into track two? Also, my google pixel doesn't have a headphone output so, they need to be Bluetooth, problem with that is track two will lag every time time which means I'm having to use the align function. Solutions please?
1. You cannot control bleed without headphones. 2. Try to find an adapter for headphones for your Google pixel. Maybe amazon has one? 3. Bluetooth will always lag, I don't think there's a good solution for keeping tracks properly aligned with bluetooth. I'd try to find a way to use wired headphones and that should solve all your problems.
Invest in a power file, they save loads of arm ache and make shaping bodies and necks easy!
Why do you bend the string the other way before tightening
The first bend locks the string into place, keeping it from slipping. The second(upward) bend just allows the string to pass above the pegs so it doesn't "whip" during tightening.
I never thought of CUTTING the foam 🤯! My whole world has changed 🙃
Dude, you know I'll lend you tools right? You don't have to live like this anymore.
😅😅 Maybe we just make the next one at your shop!
he has a CNC and he chooses to do it the hard way. builds character i suppose😂
So the tune playing is the effect from the foam..got it thanks
Yep.
Great video, thanks! How do you braid the solder like that?
Start with an 8" long piece of thin solder. Fold it in half, twice. It should now be four strands. Twist the four strands into a braid. Not too tight, or it will break apart.
tf id thid r u that bad at palm muting
Digging the triumphant tracks at the end which match that loud and proud red color and showcase this axe super well. Congratulations on completing this work intensive build.
Thanks man. I already feel this build is a success, since each guitar tone inspired it's own new part!
Really cool, I saw the original Danelectro copy build and I'm glad this one popped up in my feed now. It's fun seeing people applying the Dano build process to other designs. I'd love to see more people experimenting with it and even different materials like sheet aluminum top and back or other composite materials. I'd really like to see something semihollow design inspired, just because it would be cool to see it with a thinner, slab body ratrod kinda look. You should definitely follow whatever inspires you though, it's been cool so far!
Hey, thanks for checking it out! I'd kind of like to try out some thin birch plywood as a top for one of these builds. I've been eying the Flying V. I have a few more planks of wood to use up, so I guess I've got some decisions to make!
Dude bro ham my mic will not work with the pod hd500x I followed your guide to a T I can hear white noise when the gain is turned up really loud, but I can’t hear anything from my mic, please help man please please if you can! The mic works on my scarlet solo focusrite just would really like to be able to use the mic on my pod 😢
Hmm, the only advice I have for the unit is to double check that your outputs are set up properly. The inputs and outputs can be a little tricky when multi-tasking with this pedal. If you don't have them set up perfectly with panning, settings and patching you may not get sound. You could save your settings on your computer and then do a factory reset and see if that helps. I suspect it's either a bad cable or one of the input or output routing settings. Also, it's good to plug headphones directly into the pod to monitor what you're doing. Is your expression pedal set up to be a volume/panner? Because sometimes that gets tricky too.
@@FrankOlsonTwins I didn’t think about the pedal! I will look into that! And I’ve tried all the different outputs to no avail, and also I have my headphones directly connected the whole time too! Gonna give the factory reset thing a try after saving the files I have on pod if edit or whatever! Thank you for the advice man, and the expedited reply!
Like I can’t even hear the mic just hooked directly without it even going usb to the computer! Makes me feel like something has to be set wrong, my guitar works fine though and when I change the inputs to mic, I still can’t hear lol it’s driving me nuts! Because I can monitor my guitar playing, but the mic is just non existent lol
I would take a look at the manual. I remember it being enormous but helpful. It could be that your XLR connector is not functioning properly. What kind of microphone? Dynamic? Because a condenser won't work on this POD.
@@FrankOlsonTwins it is a condenser mic 🫠 I had no idea man, it’s the mic that comes with the focusrite solo studio kit, I just assumed it would work on the pod too! Why wouldn’t a condenser mic work? Sorry I’m a noob brother, but I appreciate your help so much!
To be honest, i thought it was skin, and his arm hairs were shaped like picks come to find out, they're not
Squier sonic Telecaster
This is an old squier, i believe from 2004. It plays surprisingly well, but the pickups could be a little better
Oh!! great job and you made it!! anyway 15:49~19:50 nice guitar sound you plugged tiny cute LM386 amplifier witch you made it?
Thanks! The amps used on the first song are Ampeg Jet J12 for rhythm guitar, Fender Deluxe Reverb for the solos. Second song, it's just the Fender Deluxe Reverb.
@@FrankOlsonTwins Thank you sir!! and good morning!! reply from Japan(I'm Japanese). someday I'd like to hear the sound diy red-tele and tiny cute LM386 amp.
I'll make a short and put it up in the next few days, the red tele and mini DIY amp... Good idea!
New short video with the Tele and mini amp: ua-cam.com/users/shortszfZq-ERFlZE
Let me guess they made an affinity Mustang
Affinity? Nah sonic series better
Excellent video. Do you have one with Silent Plug (supplier?)? Thanks
Thanks! Not yet, I haven't tried a silent plug!
Very cool build ! I just watched your Danelectro copy video, and I loved that ! I plan to make a Daneletro Pro 1 using this build technic. One question, what is the thickness of the hardboard ?
Thanks! The hardboard measures about 4mm thick, or about 1/8". Let me know how the Pro turns out!
@@FrankOlsonTwinsYeah no problem bro! Just is it good if I use 3mm ?
Yep, I've used 3mm and it works great. You can also use thicker, like 1/4" or even 3/8" but you have to adjust the depth of your neck pocket accordingly.
What material did you used for the back and front plate ?
Hardboard, also known as Masonite.
Sorry for being annoying but what is the thickness of the plywood ?
No worries. The plywood is 3/4" AC grade, but actual measurement is 23/32. That's just how they sell 3/4" plywood. If you're going the plywood method to make the body, I would use the thinner Masonite board we chatted about. Since the neck pocket will be exactly half the thickness of the body, you'll get a little more room near the neck to sit above the top layer of masonite. The masonite board i used in this video is about .12" thick, or almost 1/8." If you use anything thicker, you might need to shim the neck pocket(if you use my method in the video here).
@@FrankOlsonTwins ok man, thanks for replying !
No problem!
900 lbs of Lemon oil LMAO
if you want to sound like a ukulele buy a ukulele
Ok so I bought a pack of strings yesterday which I’ve needed to do because I don’t think my high strings g,b,e are supposed to be BLACK
Sounds like it's time for a string change!
Технологии 100 лет в субботу.
Sounds almost like Franklins Tower. At least the chords do. Ive actually tried a similar hack for dampening . Your idea is a little better.
One nice thing is, you can cut the foam smaller if you want less dampening...
I wish I could change strings that fast I have 31 guitars it's a real pain in the butt
One of the few problems with owning lots of guitars!
Нах струны резать
Palm muting: 🤨
You didn’t level the frets or lower the action. Nor show its current action. Just cleaning and polishing is not only superficially aesthetic, it might actually worsen its playability.
Didnt have new strings but i just cleaned my strings and board and the difference in sound was CRAZY 😂....
Cleaning your strings can be a dramatic difference in sound!
Para que servi isso aí
Para que es
Now show us how to intonate it lol
Let's break strings
Nah, these are pretty flexible
You guys clean your guitars
losen the strings before you cut them, it can damage the neck from the sudden tension release caused by cutting the strings
Very true!
I really like the idea
Keep an eye open at thrift stores and yard sales!
